Job Summary:
The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) Assistant supports patient care, operating room efficiency, and daily clinical and administrative operations within the Ambulatory Surgery Center. This role requires flexibility, teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to float between departments to maintain patient flow and safety.
The ASC Assistant works under the direction of Registered Nurses and leadership to assist with patient preparation, operating room turnover, anesthesia support, sterile processing needs, and administrative tasks to ensure a safe, efficient, and patient-centered surgical experience.
Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
Clinical & Operating Room Support
- Demonstrates knowledge of Ambulatory Surgery Center functions and completes duties within assigned areas.
- Floats readily between all clinical and operational areas as needed.
- Assists with operating room (OR) setup, turnover, cleaning, and restocking between cases.
- Prepares surgical suites, equipment, supplies, and rooms for patient admission and procedures.
- Applies principles of aseptic technique, standard precautions, and transmission-based precautions.
- Performs duties in a timely manner to avoid delays and maintain efficient patient flow.
- Assists with prepping patients for surgery, including positioning, transport, and comfort measures.
Patient Care & Safety
- Assists in the safe transfer of patients between OR tables, surgery carts, wheelchairs, and other patient conveyances.
- Assists Registered Nurses with local monitoring of patient vital signs as delegated.
- Provides safe, compassionate, and professional support to patients and families.
- Maintains privacy and confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
Cleaning, Restocking & Inventory
- Independently initiates and completes cleaning checklists for all patient care and work areas.
- Disinfects and restocks patient care and surgical areas according to infection control standards.
- Maintains inventory levels throughout the surgery center.
- Stocks and supplies patient care areas and equipment.
- Assists in the Sterile Processing Department as needed.
Administrative & Front Office Support
- Assists with prepping patient charts and documentation.
- Answers incoming phone calls related to ambulatory surgery center operations and directs callers appropriately.
- Schedules injection or procedure appointments using computerized scheduling systems.
- Collects payments, copays, and deposits at patient check-in and verifies insurance benefits.
- Updates patient information in practice management software.
- Gathers, enters, and updates patient data while maintaining accurate, confidential records.
- Resolves scheduling conflicts and supports efficient ASC patient flow.
General Responsibilities
- Prioritizes workload while remaining flexible to meet daily operational needs.
- Follows all safety protocols, including proper handling of medical equipment and biohazard materials.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Supports a collaborative, respectful, and patient-focused team environment.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required. Post-secondary education preferred.
- Experience in a healthcare or insurance environment preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced healthcare environment
- Comfort using electronic medical record (EMR) systems
- Basic understanding of medical terminology or willingness to learn
- Professional, compassionate, and patient-centered approach
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an ambulatory surgery center setting.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk; sit; use hands to grasp or handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk or hear. Employee must be able to sit for at least 20% of time and stand for up to 80% of time. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Compensation & Work Schedule:
- Full-time: 40 hours/week.
- Non-Exempt.
- Day Shift: Monday-Friday, 7:30AM-4:00PM.
- No evenings or weekends.
